Working together

I think we worked well as a group, because we have such a close class anyway which definitely made it a lot easier to collaborate. I really liked that I got to work with people who work in completely different ways to myself. We met a lot towards the start of the process which I think helped a lot as that meant we got our site and ideas set down quickly which gave in a chance to research a lot more into the history and our chosen parts of the history however we had one person who decided to use all of the history to make a timeline which was  discarded and changed, I believe this could have been a really good way to end the exhibition as none of our work was a direct way of showing the history it was just little pieces of it however this would have showed the exact history in an artistic way. This however got changed with 3/4 weeks to go as it was museum like so we tried to change this as a group however it was quite hard as nothing really interested this particular person we bounced a couple of ideas around and came up with a hologram again looking at all of the history. This however was not possible with the time frame so it became a rewrite of the poem ‘The Labourer’. I think this person struggled and we all tried to be there and put as much support in as we could however due to there being such as short time left we all got consumed in our own work which is understandable but I wish I had considered the stress she was going through more as I think I could have helped.

Research

I think we all done a lot of research and it helped that we all discussed it and all looked at different aspects then told one another which also helped actually come up with ideas as some of us noticed different things or thought of different things when different aspects of the history was being mentioned which definitely informed the final pieces. We found research in a number of different places, the internet, books, the archives and also the owner of the pub knew everything there was to know about the location which was extremely helpful however we didn’t get to meet him until towards the end of the project as we were having discussions with the mangers.

Communication

There was a lot of communication between the group from the start however in some places there was miscommunication which did create some problems such as the change of the idea of the timeline. Also towards the end (the last week or so) there was a lack of communication between one person and the rest of the group however not really with me as we communicated quite a lot but only between ourselves where as the rest of us were either meeting up or talking on a group inbox on Facebook. I wish this wasn’t the case as she could have gained a lot more help and support.

Exhibition

I think the final outcome of this was as good as it could be given the time frame. We didn’t have the best room to work with for an exhibition however I feel we really transformed the room from what it usually looks like. The main downfall was the tables and chairs as soon as you walked into the room. We did hope that the public would not pay as much attention to it and we tried to make the space start after the black fabric however this obviously wasn’t going to work as the whole space was being evaluated. I think the different pieces worked very well in the space however I think it would have been better if we had more room and spread it out a bit. I think each of the works had their own way of drawing people in and there was something for everyone as there was a range of different types of art and I think the personality of the different artists definitely came out in each persons work.

My Final Piece

I loved making my piece for this project, it was something completely different and I feel like I could let go of control a little bit which I think you can’t do to make images. However with this piece there was no real structure, pieces kept getting added and removed, changing places and it wasn’t complete until the opening time the first day of the exhibition. I think it looked good because of all the different aspects of it and every different angle you see something different. I am also very glad that put different things on different levels as to start out with I thought this was all going to be on the floor.  I think I should have put some kind of barrier around the work even if it was just some tape on the floor as I did have some incidents with things that wee on the floor being knocked over. This piece was a finished piece considering the situation (have to share the room and colaborate with four other students) however if I had that whole room to myself I would have liked to have filled it with this stuff and maybe had a walk path going through.

Exhibition

Here are the images from the exhibition.

This is my piece, nothing was really changed through out the course of the exhibition however it was different to other images I have put up and I know that it would be different if I tried to do it again just because I was still finding more things and gluing different things together up until the day before.

This is Georgia piece which also didn’t change through the course of the exhibition. This piece I really liked I think because it was separate from the other works which I think helped it and was a big advantage as you just experienced that where as with the other pieces you could see the other parts of the exhibition as well as that piece which I think sometimes can be a bit distracting.

This is Rayhannah’s piece, this only got changed position in this space which partly I think worked for the better however we had put it the way we had so it was more separate and there was enough space to read it however it did look good with the plain black background.

This is Rebecca’s work which was an interactive piece which I think helped a lot and let us know what people thought about our exhibition exhibition and whether they thought a it was a good idea or not to be independent from the UK.

This last piece is Jadey’s work which did change quite a bit throughout the exhibition due to a number of suggestions from lectures.

The first  way it was set out was as a work in progress with construction doing the work

The second way was just the piece what was actually complete left up

Then the third way went back to work in progress however it was Jadey actually doing the work as a performance piece.

Helen Chadwick

I am going to look at Chadwisk’s installation pieces especially the ones including food which I know of two specific examples, Carcass which is currently in Tate, Liverpool and the second piece is Cacao.

Raymond Williams’ Keywords: Art, Culture and Society in 1980s Britain

This is Carcass which is a sculptural piece of a clear box filled with food. I like this piece as it is forever changing as the food disintegrates and probably grows fungus. I love how you  can look at from all different angles and you will notice something different which is what I hoped my piece would be like.

This is made of chocolate and it bubbles. I have read a few reviews about this and spoke to some people and a lot  of them mentioned that just looking at they thought it was feces but the smell was so strong and sweet that they quickly realised otherwise. I wanted to look at this just because of the smells which is a big thing I wanted to incorporate into my piece.

Preparation

I have started to glue what ever I can together now so when we set up most of it is already dried and I can just glue last minute bits. I’m unable to glue everything at home as I don’t think I would be able to get it to the site safely.

In my head this work also resembles my work and the ‘Mad Scientist’ way that I am working. I love the mess and the chaos because to me this is really, this explains most peoples minds a lot of the time. That is why I have loved doing this project, I have only completely let go and actually run with a project once before in college where as because this is new I have just let myself do whatever I feel like and put together what I feel like and incorporate whatever I feel like.

Jeremy Deller

Jeremy Deller is a very all around and impulsive artists he works in so many different ways and with so many different people and that alone is inspiring to have the confidence and skills to work with a lot of different people which I think we have had to do during this project.

Jeremy Deller's History Of The World

This piece of Deller’s work I thought automatically connected to my work just because of the craziness of it. As I have mentioned before my sculpture is going to resemble a ‘Mad Scientist’ Lab and to me when I first looked at this I thought of it being like the thought process of a ‘Mad Scientist’. Also the way this is set out is probably the way my sculpture would look if i tried to draw it as I cannot draw at all so I would probably write words instead of drawing it.

Advertising and invitations

We have used a few different ways to advertised our exhibition. We have sent out invites to lectures, we have put posters up around university and in a few art  related galleries and and shops around swansea. We have also made a Facebook page with information about the exhibition and we have the poster’s being played on a loop on the screens around university.

Experimenting in the space

Today we had an assessment which took place in the site and we had to set up our exhibition.

This is going to be made a lot bigger and I am going to make this a lot bigger and I am also going to make the whole thing more sculptural, and putting more things together rather than just connecting it all.
